30-minute choreography session following Monday night advanced tap class. Students must take class in order to participate in the choreography class.
The heyday of tap dance is no longer behind us! Tap has reemerged as a vital, creative art. Popularized by such great dancers as Fred Astaire, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Ann Miller, Eleanor Powell and Gene Kelly, tap has found new inspiration through the work of Gregory Hines, Savion Glover, the Jazz Tap Ensemble and, most recently, Dorrance Dance.
In this class you'll learn how to build on the fundamentals, adding sounds to the basic steps and creating faster and more intricate rhythms. We will also spend some time on improvisation, which will add another dimension to your dancing!

Our Improvisation drop-in class is for students who are currently taking or graduated from our Tap Level 3 workshop or for intermediate tap students with two or more years of experience.
Because rhythm tap is part of the jazz idiom, the ability to improvise is an ultimate goal for tap dancers. To have the flexibility to respond in the moment to a musical "statement" is a very liberating experience! However, the idea of improvising can be intimidating often because it usually involves dancing solo.
This class aims to demystify the improvisation process by:
1) Demonstrating that improvisation does not mean creating something out of nothing but, rather, means adapting the vocabulary we already have
2) Providing indispensable musical information and strategies for organizing an improvisation
We'll do structured exercises and group improvisation (yes, it is possible to practice tap improvisation as a group!), and we'll also create material to use in short musical exchanges ("trades") with each other. Most importantly, we'll have fun!
